Release Confirmed

posted in Guild Wars 2

ArenaNET have always said that they intended to release Guild Wars 2 "When it's ready", and that would be determined by the feedback taken from the beta's and stress-test's. There has now been two pre-purchase beta weekends (BWE's) and 2 short server stress tests, and it would seem they have made their decision!

Guild Wars 2 will be released on 28th August, 2012. There is also a 3rd and final beta weekend from the 20th-22nd of July for everyone to do those last little important things prior to launch such as determining class choice, character creation and all those little fact finding missions.

For myself and all other pre-purchasers we get a 3 day head start, allowing us to begin on the 25th of August. There is no news yet (that I am aware of) as to how frequently the World vs World match-ups will rotate but it has been speculated based on quotes from the development team, that it will rotate faster for the first few weeks to try and create some early resemblance of server balance.

Guardian vs Warrior Pt. 2

posted in Guild Wars 2

Last night was the 2nd stress test for the beta and I started with the intent to give my Guardian some time in WvWvW so I could try and find an accurate comparison to the Warrior and which fits my play-style better.

My results... well, it's a bit iffy. I went back to my Warrior after around 30 minutes but kept thinking (and saying, much to the other ventrilo users frustration I'm sure!) about how much more useful the Guardian would be in various situations or how different the fight would be if I were the Guardian... but I have decided to stick to my Warrior.

My findings for the Guardian, at least at a low level where there is little gear customization available, is that it is insanely more survivable than the Warrior. My Warrior is constantly diving for the heal button and just trying to stay alive a few seconds longer, my Guardian on the other hand was able to tank multiple camp guards without his health dropping at all. Better passive healing and cleansing I was barely even touching my heal button. Clearly for that I am favouring the Guardian by a LARGE margin, for taking on PvE objectives/content and small groups of players the Guardian just seems to not die.

Part 2: Review

posted in Guild Wars 2

I figure a bit more on my beta impressions is necessary, I may later on do some indepth detailing of how various parts of it work but for now, just a quick 'review' if you like.

Graphics/Engine
The art style is both fairly standard and very unique at the same time. The characters, world, it's inhabitants etc - are all what you find in the average MMO these days - not too sparkly not too 'blob of colour' and actually quite well detailed even on medium settings. The UI is minimalistic and very artistic, which works very well with the rest of the game. As for the unique part I mentioned, well that's mostly seen during the cut-scenes. All being built out of layers ontop of each other, like a moving painting... not that that's a great description. Generic Screenshot

The few things I expected to frustrate me with the art style were the 'Korean' style things, namely the Asuran race. But actually, I am even pondering whether to make one and simply kit it in heavy armor to look like a dwarf! There are some hilarious things in the game such as the tonics from mystical chests. Notrust takes a tonic for 'hare loss'

Guardian vs Warrior

posted in Guild Wars 2

So my main intent of the beta weekend other than to check out the mechanics of the game, was to try and make a class choice. Have I succeeded? Not quite. Here's a brief run down of what I felt the classes were good at/my experiences.

Guardian
In Structured PvP (full traits/skills/rank/gear) with the build I had, I felt near unkillable. I certainly wasn't dishing out the damage and I have no idea how much my passive healing was helping (if it did anything) - but I was able to defend a point for plenty of time until help arrived. Even against 5 opponents.

In World PvP, I felt both useful and useless at the same time. Fighting camp guards I was fantastic for being a tank and I honestly rarely needed to use my heal skill, defending keeps the main fun was nipping out the gate - dropping a reflective projectile wall infront of the gate - nipping back in. Again though, how useful was that? I don't know. Sure people were causing a lot of damage to themselves but with everyone being able to heal/escape actually finishing a player is very rare unless you can get right up in their grill.

Part 1: Initial Beta Impressions

posted in Guild Wars 2

So the full scale beta weekend went live at 8pm GMT on friday the 27th, as expected there were some teething problems. Initially all seemed fine but as more and more people connected spammed that login screen.. it all went horribly wrong.

Eternally failing to connect to the login servers and quite a few connection drops for those playing was the lot assigned to all those who were just itching to play. But.. come 4am and my traditionally bad sleep pattern kicks in, time for a game! 10mintues later there's server maintenance!

Still, I've played around 30minutes in total and am starting to get a feel for how it's going to work. At 4200xp for level 2-3 and the knowledge that there is no leveling curve it looks like leveling up to 80 will be VERY quick (Edit: There is a slight increase at lower levels (approx 200xp), when I get to the upper ones I'll check again). That's potentially a bad thing but not really, because the majority of the content is PvP based and all the PvP areas bump you up anyway. (For contrast, I got 120xp for every map section I discovered, and there's a lot of them).
